Long covid and oxygen therapy: what does research say?
Months after an infection, many people still struggle with fatigue, concentration and sleep. More and more of them search for hyperbaric oxygen. Here is what has been studied.
Long covid, or post-covid condition, is the name for symptoms that persist for months after a covid-19 infection: fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, shortness of breath and pain. Hyperbaric oxygen is being studied in hospitals as one of the possible approaches.
The best-known study is a double-blind trial from Israel with 73 people who had had symptoms for at least three months. Forty HBOT sessions were compared with a sham protocol. The researchers measured more improvement in cognitive function, energy, sleep and pain in the HBOT group, together with changes in brain perfusion on MRI. Follow-up studies from the same group continue to look at the longer term.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves neurocognitive functions and symptoms of post-COVID condition: randomized controlled trial
Zilberman-Itskovich S, et al. · Scientific Reports (2022)
73 people with long covid for at least 3 months
A double-blind trial comparing 40 daily HBOT sessions with a sham protocol. The HBOT group improved more in global cognitive function, attention and executive function, and in the energy, sleep, psychiatric symptom and pain domains. MRI showed changes in brain perfusion.
